A new drug for prostrate tumors

Abiraterone, a new pill by Cougar Biotechnology Inc, has shown to be highly active and durable for prostrate tumors, a research said.

According to the Phase I clinical trial results, the once-day-pill has considerably shrank tumors in people with advanced prostrate cancer.  The tests had also shown that Abiraterone had delayed the worsening of the disease.

Expressing confidence that the drug would make a difference, a researcher at the Britain’s Institute of Cancer Research, which conducted the study, said that the drug prevented the cancer from making its own hormones. He also pointed out that the drug not only blocked harmone generation in the testes, but also elsewhere in the body.

He said that about 70 to 80 per cent of the men studied showed decline in the Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA). The PSA level increases if there is a tumor. The researcher stated that the men with prostrate tumor who had been put under trial had also shown no side effects.

It is estimated that more than 605,000 men worldwide are diagnosed for prostrate cancer and about 220.000 die of it.

The Phase III trials are now going on and hope that the drug would be in the market by 2011.
