Metabolism. We all know that that word means, we’ve all cursed it as it’s slowed down and forced us to work hard as we’ve grown older but what many of us don’t know is that there are ways to get back that extra kick that we once had! Besides the obvious of staying around from sugary foods and getting off the couch every once in a while there are foods that we can eat in order to help our metabolism grow.
Before I get into which foods do what and why I’d like to point out one of the most important metabolism rules. Never skip meals. If you’ve ever tried to lose weight you’re probably guilt of this little body sin but don’t do it! Think of your metabolism as a machine that runs on food. It can only handle so much at a time and when you give food to it, it burns it off quickly and efficiently.
If you decide only to give it one big hunk of fuel a day not only is it going to be too much at one time for it to burn but also there is the fact that it hasn’t been running all day, so it’s going to take a while to get heated up. By the time your metabolism is ready to get to work a lot of the fuel you’ve given it has already drizzled out of the can and into your thunder thighs. Oh no!
So, if you love to eat like I do, please go at it. You can have six meals a day the only thing is you may only have small portions and you need to space them out properly. You can’t have one small meal, wait ten minutes and decide it’s time for your next. Then you might as well have just had the one big one. Give your food time to digest before you add more.
Since we’re talking about food we’ll go into what is good for you! Green tea is awesome for boosting the metabolism. It’s very low in caffeine and is even full of antioxidants that can help your body heal and fight off infection.
You know that sweaty, hot feeling you get when you eat spicy foods? Well I’d love to say that that IS your metabolism kicking it, but it’s really not. All the same what spicy foods DO to your body is help it release a few stress hormones and thus help you burn calories like paper to the flame.
Any food that is rich in water. Water is, in my humble opinion the end all be all of miracle…liquids. It’s important not to just chug a gallon when you wake up and think you’re done, but to do it just like everything else and space your intake smartly. When I say foods rich in water I mean fruits that run when you bite into them and of course soups! Grapefruit, pears, apples, peaches, and kiwi are fantastic examples and so are a lot of veggies!
Oatmeal and other wheat-y products are also a good idea. Certain cereals with whole grains are your friends and so is wheat bread! Have a little of these things throughout the day and you’re sure to tell your metabolism to get into gear!
