The reason for the concern is because it is a new strain and there is no natural immunity or effective and available vaccine to prevent it. Therefore, the potential is there for it to spread rapidly. We always worry about another flu similar to the “Great Flu” of 1918 that killed between 70 and 100 million people worldwide.
If the strain turns out to be particularly dangerous and spreads rapidly throughout a continent or the world, it can have huge repercussions from a health standpoint, mortality statistics, and financial impact. So far, people in Mexico seem to be getting a particularly bad reaction from this virus and so far other countries are handling it better. We don’t know why this is the case.
We have to wait and watch in order to see what this one will do. The flu of 1918 (also called the Spanish flu) waned a bit in the summer, then returned in the fall with a vengeance. We should be vigilant and people who are ill should stay home. It is better to err on the side of caution. Try to avoid being around sick people and be vigilant in hand washing. Only time will tell how dangerous this will be.
