A Question: How many bones has the human Leg??

Health Tip: I cannot hear at times, am I deaf?

There are times when we are not able to hear common sounds. This brings in a small amount of fear; the fear of deafness. Deafness is the impairment of the ear to hear certain frequencies of sound which can otherwise be heard by a healthy ear.

Sometimes, it is simply a case of poor concentration. We are not concentrating on what is being said and hence we don’t “hear”.

Well, if this is the case, you are definitely not deaf. Deafness usually sets in as we grow old. The cochlea or the inner portion of the ear loses its sensitivity to process sound. If the sound is amplified or increased by sufficient amounts (which is done with the help of a hearing aid), the person is able to hear well.

Deafness can be inherited too though no particular gene has been identified so far to cause impairment of hearing. Sometimes deafness may result as a side effect of another illness such as measles and meningitis. Meningitis damages the cochlea. Mumps, AIDS, premature birth and foetal alcohol syndrome are some of the causes of deafness.

With the advent of hearing aid machines, deafness is partial can be cured. Hearing aids are available at economic prices and without looking too conspicuous, they perform their job well of improving the hearing ability.
