Genital warts, also called condylomata acuminata, are one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases. In fact, research reveals that genital warts infect 5.5 million Americans each year. HPV (Human papillomavirus) is responsible for genital warts.
Genital warts symptoms are normally obvious. Small bumps appear as individual growths or they can group together in clusters around the genital region. Some of these clusters may have a cauliflower-like appearance. They range in color from whitish or grey looking to red, pink or skin color. In women, the warts may grow in the wall of vagina, between external genitals and the anus. In men, warts can be found on the tip or shaft of the penis.
Prevention of this disease is possible by avoiding sex with an infected person. Using condoms can protect you, but not all the time as warts can grow in the unprotected area too.
Different treatments are available for genital warts such as freezing with liquid nitrogen or using laser treatment but these are not permanent solutions. HPV remains dormant in the body and genital warts can reappear at anytime. Topical chemical solutions and anti-viral solutions have been applied successfully as well as cryotheraphy, surgical removal and electro surgery.
