Older children are being diagnosed more with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) while the rate is seen to be steady in children below 12, a report says.
The new study, based on an annual survey of 35,000 to 40,000 U S households, notes that for children between the age group of 6 and 11, the proportion of ADHD or Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) was around seven per cent. But it was found to be hovering around ten per cent in children between the age group of 12 and 17. The study also notes that each year, the percentage of older children with ADHD has been rising by four percent.
The study also shows that an older child can have ADHD or ADD without being impulsive or hyperactive. ADHD is a behavioural and learning problem that usually appears in children around age seven. As many as 4.4 million children in the US has been diagnosed with ADHD.
However, several experts have expressed surprise at the findings. They speculate that the studies will only raise the tendency among the doctors to diagnose for ADHD in older children, which only coincides with the marketing of medicines. It only tends to the misuse of ADHD medicines, they opined.
