Health News: Antipsychotic medications increases the risk of death in aged patients

By admin | Aug 25, 2008

AUGUST 26. WASHINGTON - A recent study reveals that aged patients, who have been taking prescribed doses of conventional or the first-generation antipsychotic medication, are vulnerable to death due to respiratory or cardio vascular diseases.

This is not the same incase of the patients, who have been taking atypical or the second generation antipsychotic medications.

The study further contributes to the rising evidence that the first generation antipsychotic is not safer than the second generation antipsychotic for the aged.

Previously, it was identified that the second generation medication may pretense the growing mortality, but the new research makes a comparison between the conventional and the atypical medications and the specific cause of death.

These antipsychotic drugs are prescribed to the aged patients suffering from mental problems and conditions related to mental health.

In the past few years, doctors have been prescribing atypical medications, which have minimum side effects,
mostly neurological, than compared to the conventional medications.

Studies conducted during the year 2005 came up with suggestions that the death rate is likely to increase by 605 with the use of atypical antipsychotic in aged patients who have dementia.

The FDA, following this suggestion, issued a health advisory for public without extending to the conventional antipsychotic.
