Health News: DNA sequencing to tackle typhoid

DNA sequencing can help in the diagnosis of typhoid, which kills around six lakh people every year, according to a recent study.

The researchers at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, says that the DNA sequencing will help in tracing the source of typhoid outbreaks, which help a long way in its treatment and also which helps in the spread of the disease.

Around 17 million typhoid cases are reported every year. The tragedy is that young people are more prone to the disease. The mapping data helps in identifying the outbreaks, they said and added that it helps in effective vaccination campaigns.

Typhi, which is found only in humans, and its genomes are extremely similar, which hampers the tracking of typhoid. The researchers say that DNA sequencing will help in tackling Typhi.

They say that the new genomic method is an answer to the killer disease. The Typhi lies dormant in carriers, who show no symptoms. But the danger is that it can infect others. Noting out that Genomes are a legacy of any organism’s existence, they say that once the genomes are tracked, the spread of Typhi can be controlled.

The researchers studied 19 isolates of Typhi.
