Health News: Female condoms are still unpopular with women

AUGUST 10. MEXICO CITY - The only option for women to safeguard herself from HIV is female condom. Even then, it is largely ignored by most of them, as female condoms are quite expensive and rarely available.

The number of women affected by HIV in the modern world is considerably more than men. An independent survey showed that around 70,000 women are affected daily by HIV.

This has been the resultant of the unawareness and indolence for the past 15 years. The worst affected area is Saharan Africa, as reported by Farah Karimi. Karimi is a spokesperson of the Oxfam, which is Britain’s leading aid charity organization. Around 75% of the infected in Saharan Africa are women.

If the women had an access to the female condoms, many unwanted pregnancies, HIV infection and other sexually transmitted diseases could have been easily avoided.

A report, ‘Failing Women, Withholding Protection’ presented by Oxfam, in association with the World Population Foundation in Mexico at XVII International AIDS Conference, states that innumerable lives could have been saved if necessary measures were taken to popularize female condoms with women.

Although condom is quite large and seems unwieldy, they are slowly becoming popular with women. The only reason of it not being used widely is its price. Most experts feel that if they can have access to female condoms, the figure shown by the survey can be reduced to an appreciable level.
