Gangrene was a common problem during wartimes when soldiers lost their limbs and there were no antibiotics to cure the infections that set in, ultimately leading to gangrene and loss of limb or life.
Gangrene sets in to a part of the body where there is no blood supply and the tissues around it die. This part turns black and there is pus in it. Though gangrene set in to the arms, legs, fingers and toes more often it can happen to any part of the body where there is tissue. There is a wet gangrene and a dry one.
Gangrene usually sets in following an injury when there is no blood supply to the spot because of the injury and the tissue dies. Wet gangrene is brought on by bacteria which destroy the body tissue.
A kind of bacteria called clostridium also known as gas gangrene, produces toxins in the wound which makes the skin look like bubbles with infections and pus which spreads very fast.
Gangrene is always caused by the blocking or stopping of blood supply to the body tissue. This is usually brought on by too much of alcohol consumption, severe burns, frostbite, thrombosis, smoking, diabetes and injuries. Those who are very old are also at risk of gangrene.
