AUGUST 13. WASHINGTON – According to the U.S National Institute on Aging (NIA), due to the effects of ageing on the ability of a body to respond to summer heat, adults, especially older ones, are more at risk to develop heat related illness such as heat fatigue, heat stroke, heat exhaustion and heat cramps.
NIA has stated several factors, which are responsible for increasing the risk of heat-related illness. The factors include age related changes to the skin, mainly inefficient sweat glands & poor blood circulation, high blood pressure that requires dietary changes, consumption of alcoholic beverages, taking drugs for various conditions and being dehydrated for long hours.
Some of the important recommendations from NIA for all those people, who suffer from heat related illness, are getting the person out of the sun’s heat and moving him to a cool place.
They also recommend offering fluids like water, vegetable or fruit juice, encouraging the person to bathe, shower or sponge the body with cool water and applying cold, wet cloth to the areas where arterial blood flows close to the surface such as the wrists or neck.
According to experts, these type of illness can be avoided by not visiting overcrowded places and prevent overdressing.
