AUGUST 28. BALTIMORE - A team of researchers at the John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health has supposedly found a virus that might tackle malaria.
This is a welcome news for people around the globe, as every year the disease causes a large number of deaths across the globe.
The Anopheles mosquito, which transmits malaria, has been seen to be infected by the virus found by the researchers. Once infected the mosquitoes would die within ten days thereby preventing the malarial parasite from developing within their body.
However, the researchers stated that it would take some time before the discovery can be transformed into reality.
This discovery was done by the researchers while they were in the midst of another experiment. They were studying, if the Anopheles mosquitoes could be affected by the Wolbachia bacteria. In the due course of their study, they came across this new virus that spells trouble for the mosquitoes.
Anopheles can be made weak by passing the virus on to them. However, it cannot be done easily and the transmission has to be made genetically. But, the researchers have complete faith that once the mosquitoes are affected by the virus, they would not be bale to transmit malaria anymore as before.
