Health News: Parents with autistic children have high risk of infection

http://www.healthtip.info/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/bilde.jpgParents who have children who are affected with Down’s syndrome or autism have low immunity and are more prone to infections. Caring for children with these problems increases the stress levels of these parents which makes the immune system less efficient in its functions.

There have been similar results of elderly spouses caring for an ailing partner, but now research shows that the same holds good for younger people who have to take care of children with problems too. They also need support groups to help them to cope with the stress that they are going through.

In researches conducted on parents who had been given the pneumococcal vaccine, it showed that those who had children with disabilities had a lower level of antibodies in their blood, compared to parents who had normal children and had also received the same vaccine. Parents caring for children with developmental problems continued to have a poor response to the vaccine even after a period of six months.

Stress was the main reason for this poor immune function. Such parents should be given suitable assistance in coping with heir children and also training to help them in their daily support functions.
