Health News: Researchers go one step further in discovering drugs for controlling obesity

AUGUST 22. WASHINGTON - Researchers have taken an important step towards making drugs that can control obesity in humans.

Recently, they developed a particular strain of mice resistant to obesity that is induced by diet. In fact, the researchers have also come to know some important facts related to the brain circuitry, which is responsible
in controlling energy homeostasis. Energy homeostasis is the balance between the amounts of food (energy)
taken by an animal and the rate at which it burns the energy.

As per the study, researchers found that both the normal and mutant mice weighed approximately the same with the latter weighing slightly less. However when both were given a high fat diet, the mutant mice gained much less weight than the normal ones, although both ate the same amount of food. This was because the mutant mice burnt energy faster than the normal ones.

According to Dr. Bradford Lowell who led the study, it is the GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid), a particular neurotransmitter, that plays an important role in regulating the relationship between consumed food and expended energy.

More researches are under progress to confirm the role of GABA in obesity in the case of humans. If they are successful, new drugs will soon be available in the market that can control obesity in humans.
