Health news: Risk of Schizophrenia is triggered by Genetic Factors

By admin | Aug 17, 2008

AUGUST 17. WASHINGTON - Research on Schizophrenia has achieved a major breakthrough.

Reports say that schizophrenia can be caused due to genetic variations.

Schizophrenia has emerged as a known term and its symptoms include language disruptions, disturbed thoughts and perception, unsocial activities and preferences.

An approximate of 1 percent of the earth’s population is effected by schizophrenia.

Nature and Nature Genetics, the esteemed scientific journal, has published the study of 3 international schizophrenia research groups. The result says that genetic variations are genuinely responsible for schizophrenia.

Byran Mowry, the co-author of the Nature Paper and a member of the Queensland University says “Together, these three papers represent a landmark week in schizophrenia genetics. This is an important step in order to unravel the challenging biology of schizophrenia.”

He added, “The human DNA blueprint consists of three billion letters of code, most of which are the same between individuals, but about 10 million of which can take at least two forms.”

The research involved 7000 schizophrenia cases from all over the world, of which more than 400 cases were Australians. It was conducted by a team of 50 researchers, the best-fit in this regard and they belong to 30 international institutions.
