Health News: Stroke risk in dementia patients taking antipsychotic drugs

AUGUST 29. LONDON – According to a report from British researchers, people, who are taking any antipsychotic drug, are more to have strokes in comparison to others not on treatment.

According to the researchers, such risks are higher, around 3-4 times, in case of individuals having dementia. This means that doctors should prescribe antipsychotic drug to patients with such diseases as last resort.

According to Ian Douglas & his colleagues at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, risks, which are associated with antipsychotic drugs, outweigh their benefits of patients with dementia. They feel that such drugs should not be prescribed to such patients.

The test was conducted on medical record of over 7,000 patients of recognized treatment centers. All of them were stroke victims at one point or the other after being prescribed antipsychotic drugs.

Test concluded that the risk rate was over 1.5 times for having stroke symptoms. It was even higher in cases of dementia patients.

However, researchers overlooked the cause of higher risks in dementia patients.

According to Douglas, who is also an epidemiologist, it may be due to the vascular effect of dementia. Still, he was uncertain of the actual cause.
