Health News: Study shows that eating oily fish leads to better eyesight

AUGUST 10. WASHINGTON - Recent study shows that oily fish consumption can help in the reduction of macular degeneration, which is inevitable with ageing. Macular degeneration is the major cause of poor vision or blindness in most parts of western countries. It is the utmost cause of global blindness.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) can be classified into two categories: wet and dry. Vision loss is the outcome of wet AMD.

A research was conducted by the team in seven European countries, corresponding to the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. The purpose of the research undertaken was to study the relation between the intake of fish and the Omega 3 fatty acids to the wet AMD.

The participants were questioned about their diet plans and the amount of fish intake in their diet plans. With the food composition chart, the main Omega 3 fatty acids was calculated with the list of their diet plans.

It was then concluded that people, who consumed oily fish at least once a week, had low chances of wet AMD in comparison to the ones, who consumed it less often. Non-oily fish is of no use for our body.

Fishes like tuna, salmon and mackerel are all oily fish and very beneficial for our health, as they supply 500mg of EPA and DHA. The use of supplements of Omega 3 fatty acids is not recommended, as there is a doubt whether it will have the same effect or not.
