Health News:Women with gestational diabetes risks more with type 2 diabetes

Women having gestational diabetes are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes and 20 per cent of them developing the condition in nine years of their pregnancy, a study says.

The University of Toronto, Mount Sinai Hospital and the Institute for Clinical had conducted the study, which examined about 21,823 women with gestational diabetes.

The researchers have found that the diabetes rate increased rapidly in the first nine months of delivery and reaching the ultimatum at 9 years. They found that the diabetes rate was much higher in women having gestational diabetes than those without gestational diabetes.

They also claim that their study covered large geographic region with a population of 13 million people. This itself is a proof of the findings, they said and added that involving a larger section of the people had helped them in assessing the type 2 diabetes in women having gestational diabetes.

The study published in the CMAJ also points out that living in urban areas and low-income areas was a risk factor for gestational diabetes. But the researchers say that they could not assess the effect of ethnicity, level of fasting glucose during pregnancy and obesity, which are considered to be associated with diabetes.
