Hodgkin’s disease: A deadly disease

Most of the medical personnel know Hodgkin’s disease as Hodgkin’s lymphoma. It has been named after Thomas Hodgkin, who studied this particular type of lymphoma. The disease spreads over from one lymph node to the other. If detected in the early stages, the disease is curable through chemotherapy. The disease takes an incurable form in the later stages and may even cause death.

Symptoms associated to Hodgkin’s disease

There are several symptoms associated with Hodgkin’s disease. The common symptom is the swelling of the lymph nodes. This swelling is, however, painless. Another symptom is splenomegaly, which causes the spleen to enlarge.

In some people, hepatomegaly is also noted. Hepatomegaly causes the enlargement of the liver. There are some people, in whom both the spleen and liver enlarges and the phenomenon is known as hepatosplenomegaly. The disease is often accompanied with backache and pain on the infected nodes after alcohol consumption. Other symptoms associated with the disease include fever, night sweat, fatigue, itchy skin and unforeseen weight loss.

No cure, only treatments

There is no complete cure to Hodgkin’s disease. However, it has several treatments. If detected in early stages, chemotherapy and radiation therapy can cure it. The ABVD chemotherapy regimen offers the best cure to the disease. A Standard V regimen, an advanced form of the ABVD is also quite popular. The form of treatment that is in vague at Europe is BEACOPP.

    I feel badly for the boy, but I am glad none of MY lymph nodes got that big from my Hodgkin’s Lymphoma! I am currently undergoing treatment, so mine are only getting smaller!
