Hormone Deprivation Therapy affects cognition

A latest study has revealed that Hormone Deprivation Therapy, widely used to treat prostate cancer, can adversely affect cognition in patients.

The new findings of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City says that Hormone Deprivation Therapy or the Androgen Depletion Therapy could impair the patient’s ability to recall and concentrate. It can affect the decision making skills of a patient.

It is said that men who have been prescribed the Hormone Deprivation Therapy could experience osteoporosis, hot flashes, fatigue, anaemia, loss of libido, erectile dysfunction, risk of cardiovascular disease, risk of diabetes and emotional distress.

The researches say that testosterone and its derivatives could impact cognition. It has been found out that between 47 and 69 per cent of the prostrate cancer patients undergoing the Hormone Deprivation Therapy has shown decline in at least one cognitive area.

The prostrate cancer patients who are administered the Hormone Deprivation Therapy has to continue on it for their lifetime. The researchers also caution the doctors and the patients to be aware of such dangers of Hormone Deprivation Therapy. The clinics have to continuously monitor the prostrate cancer patients who have been administered the Androgen Depletion Therapy for any side effects.
