Parkinson’s disease: A chronic movement disorder

Parkinson’s disease is a disease that causes disorder in movement. It is chronic and very progressive in nature, which means that the symptoms remain and worsens as time passes by. This disease occurs when a group of cells in brain begins to malfunction and then eventually die. These cells are responsible for sending information to brain for controlling the movement of various parts.

When the voluntary movements slow down, it is known as Bradykinesia, which is one of the main symptoms of this disease, as they signify delayed transmission signal from brain to muscles. Rigidity of muscles is also a symptom and the muscles tend to become stiffer during movement. A person suffering from Parkinson is likely to have an unsteady walk. They have a tendency to lean backward or forward during the walk.

There are various secondary symptom too that help us identify this disease including constipation, excessive sweating and salivation, anxiety and depression.

Treatments

There are a huge number of drugs for combating this disease like levodopa, dopamine agonists, antivirals. All these drugs work in managing problems including movements. Physical exercise works wonder in increasing mobility of muscle, less stiff and rigid.

Deep brain stimulation is the most common type of surgery to treat such diseases. It treats many problems, but does not solve all of them.
