This week, you might have a hard time with discharge and contractions. Your mucus plug is lost and your cervix might be dilated and thin. Your breasts are ready with colostrum and your nipples are tender. Also, the contractions suddenly seem to increase in frequency if you are actually going into labor mode.
You might have sudden spurts of energy which is termed as the ready-for-nesting period. The water bag breaks, the amniotic sack ruptures and you may experience nausea or diarrhea. There may be a bloody show with pinkish brown blood in the mucous discharge.
The baby’s lanugo has disappeared by this time. Also, the baby is free of vernix coating. Your body supplies the antibodies that is necessary for the baby to resist infection in the first few months after birth. Your doctor will check if the umbilical cord is coiled around the baby’s neck. At about 14 inches in length, the baby may weigh about 7 pounds at this stage.
If you go into labor and watch your baby arrive, you might see some vernix and hair on the baby. Also, the baby’s head might be slightly cone-shaped, but this is set right in a few days.
