A new trauma struck among doctors and hormone therapists this month. Previously it was prescribed to many women patients to terminate taking hormone pills after their menopause phase. This has got a beneficial effect as because heart problems and breast cancer were much lowered in women after they stopped taking the hormone pills (estrogen-progestin). But recent studies have proved that it may increase the risk of having other types of cancer.
Dr. Gerardo Heiss who is the professor of University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill) was the person who escorted this study. The study was conducted on some women some years after they had stopped the usage of the pills. It was revealed that the risk of having other type of cancers like lungs or any malignant disease is about 24% or more. Dr. Heiss and co-instigator Dr. Joann Manson remarked that the study couldn’t find the possible reasons for having such risks but they are undertaking investigations to do that.
Dr. Michael Lauer of National Institutes of Health was the one who carried out and sponsored the study. As per him though estrogen-progestin capsules have got some beneficial effects but their after effects are much perilous. The inference has been rightly drawn after the users of the pills are judged against with the non-users. Now the postmenopausal women are now advised not to use such hormone pills for treating colorectal cancer, hip fissures etc. If there is no alternative treatment doctors may prescribe these pills but in lower doses only if the problem faced by the patient is unendurable.
Dr. Joseph Camardo of Wyeth Pharmaceuticals opposed such remarks made by the researchers of the study. As per him Wyeth Pharmaceuticals who are one of the makers of such hormone pills properly examine the capsules before they recommended and launch them in the market. As per Dr. Camardo, the results may vary with persons of different ages and health conditions. Correct usage instructions of the capsules are properly printed on their packets which must be strictly abided by the patients or it may give undesired results.
