Obesity (adiposis) is a growing global problem. According to the World Health Organization, it has reached epidemic proportions. Approximately 20% of adults in Europe and more than 30% in the USA are considered obese. Current studies state that an increasing number of people are getting fatter.

Seriously obese patients with a Body-Mass Index greater than 35 kg/m2 present special problems for doctors and nurses. Surgery, for example, is much more difficult than for patients with normal body weight. Many medical products are designed and constructed for people weighing up to 160 kgs.

Beds, operating tables and wheelchairs are pushed to their limits by heavier patients. But especially prior to an operation it is important to know exactly how much a patient weighs so that the right dosage of anesthetics can be calculated.

Fortunately there are seca scales with an especially high weight capacity.
