The most interesting and fascinating moment in the life of every women is the time when she becomes pregnant. For those who are conceiving a baby for the first time must be a bit tensed because this is an unusual experience in their life. Even the mothers who are becoming pregnant the next time after having a baby, experience the same feelings of joy. Well during pregnancy the fetus takes considerable amount of time (40 weeks) to develop. If you are pregnant then quickly acknowledge the stages of the fetal development that are illustrated below:
4.1STAGES OF PREGNANCY
Pregnancy in 1st Week
This is generally the initiation week of your pregnancy. It is generally counted from the first day of the starting of this 1st week of pregnancy till the end of the 40 weeks. In the 1st week the follicles will bear the ovum and within a few days the fetus will start developing in the womb. You may experience some weakness or any sort of tiredness during this week.
Pregnancy in 2nd Week
This is an important stage of your pregnancy. Your womb becomes completely prepared for the embryo to develop. The inside layer of the womb condenses and the mucus in the cervix gets slender to allow the sperm cells to pass into the fallopian tube. Now it’s the time for your ovulation. The follicles that were carrying the ovum bursts, and this discharges the ovum into the fallopian tube. Once inside the fallopian tube the ovum can survive for a period of 24 hours. Fertilization must occur in this time so as to initiate 2nd week of pregnancy. If it happens that fertilization doesn’t occur due to some reasons during this period, the ovum will get discharged during the next time of your menstruation process. Generally this doesn’t happen when the potent sperm cells are present inside the fallopian tube of a woman’s body. So you don’t need to worry.
Pregnancy in 3rd Week
In this time the fertilization takes place in which the ‘fertile’ spermatozoa will unite with ovum to produce a particular cell. This cell ultimately develops as the baby. This is the 3rd week of pregnancy. By the process of cell multiplication it will develop into hundreds of many cells and they will be transferred through your fallopian tube to the uterus region. The cell multiplies in the order of 2 initially and then it becomes more in number. This passing of the cells to the uterus generally takes 3-4 days.
After the end of the 3-4 days the egg forms with a watery liquid packed in the center region and it gets ready to enter the uterus. The egg is now termed as Blastocyst in medical terms and it is found to have two layers surrounding it. These layers will ultimately develop in to the embryo and the placenta. The Blastocyst will remain in the womb and gets nourishment from the secretion of the glands present in the uterus wall. Just at the end of this week the Blastocyst will eventually affix itself to the wombs inside layer. The process is known as implantation. You are now said to be having a baby as soon as implantation takes place.
Pregnancy in 4th Week
During the 4th week the Blastocyst fully attaches itself to the uterus wall. It can now be called an embryo. It also develops minute hair like projections to fasten itself to the blood vessels of the mother’s body. The placenta thus begins to form from such projections. Within one or two days the umbilical cord along with other membranes forms that secures the embryo. During this 4th week of pregnancy you will surely going to miss one of two of your periods. This is a positive sign confirming your pregnancy.

Pregnancy in 5th Week
This is another most important stage of your pregnancy as during this time your baby i.e. the embryo starts developing a head and a tail. The central nervous system begins to develop from the head and expanding to the tail region of the embryo. The cells begin to develop the brain and the spinal cord in the developing baby. Slowly and gradually the body muscles, ribs, tissues develop. But do not think that your baby is fully developed. It is still much smaller in size. Only the process of development of the baby begins in the 5th week of pregnancy.
Pregnancy in 6th Week
This stage is marked by the further development of the body of the baby. Your baby develops a head with some dimples that will develop later as the eyes and nose. The heart begins to develop along with the chest nooks. The umbilical cord now fully develops and attaches itself to the blood vessels of the mother’s body. Your baby is now fully dependant on your nutrition. So you must take more food which is nutritious. Slowly the baby also starts developing its own blood circulatory system. In this 6th week of pregnancy only the upper part of your baby forms but not the lower part. The bottom portion is still in the shape of a tail however the four limbs just emerge out as soft buds. When seen through ultrasonographic machine, the embryo looks like a half moon just because the bottom part of the embryo is underdeveloped.
Pregnancy in 7th Week
The fetus is on the way of fast development. In this week the central nervous system of your baby has reached the stage of development. The brain and the spinal cord have developed. Now slowly the arms, limbs take shape. The toes and fingers start forming. However the head of the developing child is bulgier than the rest of the body and points towards the chest. The facial structure starts forming. The mouth, lips, nose, etc. starts developing one after another. Still the eyes will take a bit amount of time to develop. In this 7th week of pregnancy your baby’s eyes will remain covered by the skin. Apart from this the internal organs of the baby’s body starts forming like the kidney, liver, heart, intestine, lungs etc. Bone cells also forms in this period.
Pregnancy in 8th Week
The basic formation of the internal organs of your baby’s body like the heart, lungs, kidney, liver etc. has reach the stage of completion. But the advanced structures of these organs are still yet to be formed. Now it’s the time for the eyes and ears to develop. The internal ear parts start developing and also the outer ear takes its shape. The eyes are covered with a thin membrane that will ultimately get the shape of the eyelids in the later stages. The nostrils take shape slowly and form the small tip of the nose and then the upper and lower jaws take shape. In this 8th week of pregnancy it is found that the mouth has taken shape because of the formation of jaws. Now after 6-7 days the formation of knees, hips and arms takes place. The lower portion of the fetus which was still like a tail then starts opening up and toes, legs starts developing. Slowly the blood vessels start forming its tangled network in the baby’s body. Your baby’s heart now starts pumping blood throughout the circulatory system of its body. Many mothers start experiencing their babies during this time in their womb.
Pregnancy in 9th Week
The process of the development of your baby’s body is going fast. The ears, nose has taken their shape and even the formation of eyes takes place. But for extra protection the eyes are covered still with a protective membrane. The fingers develop and your baby actually looks like a human baby now when seen through the sonograph machine. The body muscles have started developing earlier and now it starts taking shape. Your baby will start breathing when you are in this 9th week of pregnancy. Your baby will also show a little bit of movement in this stage though it is very small. You can also feel such movements.

Your baby will now develop stomach and its kidneys; intestines will take their appropriate position in the baby’s body this time. It is said this heart beat rate is higher than an adult in this time. The brain has attained a stage of a good amount of development but it will look much bigger than the rest of your baby’s body. However this is completely a normal activity and there’s no need to worry about it.
Pregnancy in 11th Week

But your baby’s soft hands and legs will look a little thinner when compared with the size of the entire body of the baby. This is however a normal phenomena. The umbilical cord and the placenta receive blood pumped out from your baby’s heart.
Pregnancy in 12th Week

This is because your baby has learnt to move his jaws and suck the fluid (amniotic fluid) surrounding him. This fluid contains the required nourishment for your baby. So your baby will urinate as it gulps the fluid. As the baby’s body muscles are quite developed in this time it will start making movements.
